NCC Protects Democratic Rights
In 1984 the NCC went to court to overturn a draconian election gag law that stifled every Canadian’s right to free expression. We overturned another similar election gag law in 1993 and a British Columbia gag law in 2000. And thanks to efforts by the NCC, voters from across the country were free to get real-time vote results during the 2004 federal election.
NCC Promotes Workers Rights
Through court battles, media campaigns and direct political action, the National Citizens Coalition has pushed to democratize the workplace. The NCC opposes forcing workers to join unions against their will; the NCC opposes forcing workers to fund political causes through their forced dues; the NCC has countered the political propaganda of union bosses.
NCC Opposes Government Waste
The NCC has used imaginative and creative campaigns to successfully expose and oppose government waste. Citizens and media from across the country have used our “Tales from the Tax Trough” publications as a valuable guide to pinpoint how politicians and bureaucrats misspend their hard-earned tax dollars. The NCC’s campaign to oppose the gold-plated MP pension plan succeeded in pressuring the government to reform the plan in 1995.
NCC Gives Voice for Freedom
Through news releases, letters to the editor and op-eds that have regularly appeared in newspapers like the Globe and Mail, the National Post and through appearances on radio and TV programs the NCC provides a powerful voice for those who believe in free enterprise and better government.
NCC Promotes Economic Freedom
The NCC has run campaigns that helped to bring about freer trade with the United States. Our campaigns to promote privatization have led politicians to sell off Air Canada and Petro-Canada. The NCC campaign to restore freedom for farmers promoted the Canadian Wheat Board to move towards more democratic participation in the election of its board of directors.
NCC Takes Political Action
The National Citizens Coalition project group Ontarians for Responsible Government has been credited in playing a large role in defeating the NDP government of Ontario in 1995, which paved the way for the Common Sense Revolution. In 2000 another NCC project group – HELP BC – spearheaded a court challenge against fraudulent government that ultimately played a key role in bringing down the British Columbia NDP. In federal elections the NCC has successfully targeted and defeated politicians who supported election gag laws and gold-plated, taxpayer funded MP pensions.
